Bathroom Market Sector
The market for bathroom products is expected to see value decline of 8% by 2024. This will be due to both the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic and the aftermath of Brexit which is causing distribution issues. Imported products account for over 60% of the UK baths and sanitaryware market in value terms and will therefore be the most affected area of the bathroom market.
A trend seen in almost all bathroom sectors is the move towards more luxury style products. Sales of freestanding and other style baths increased by 4% in volume terms between 2016 and 2019. Builders' merchants remain a prominent distribution channel in the bathroom products sector accounting for almost 50% of the market.
Shower Market Sector
In the UK over the past 20 years or so there has been a social movement towards a preference for showering rather than bathing, this could be attributed to the convenience and speed at which a shower can take place. There is also a growing trend towards wetrooms as well as the desire for clean lines through minimalist styles within the bathroom environment. The enclosures, screens and trays sector is dominated by enclosures with 62% share by value with a growing demand for more premium, larger enclosures and wetroom panels.
Almost every sector has been affected by the pandemic and the UK shower market is no exception, experiencing a sharp decline in 2020 and a further decline through 2021. It is however expected to return to growth in 2022.
Electric showers account for around 52% of the shower controls sector by value, although digital showers are gaining share with the trend towards smart home solutions. This drive will come from the demand for replacement and refurbishment as people continue to improve not move.
Commercial Washrooms Market Sector
In the commercial brassware sector, the need for hygienic handwashing is now a key requirement sue to the ongoing effects of the covid-19 pandemic. This is shown with a greater demand for non-touch taps. Safe thermostatic control is also an important attribute, to prevent scalding, especially in environments with either a younger or older population congregate, such as schools or hospitals.
Washroom panel systems represent the largest product sector of the commercial washroom market. It has also shown to be following the non-commercial and residential sectors with a gradual shift towards higher specification materials and finishes, in bespoke designs.
